Today in Tech – Computerworld

Host Keith Shaw talks with Ken Mingis from Computerworld and Macworld’s Michael Simon about Apple’s latest battles with the U.K. and Europe over protecting users’ data from governments and side-loading applications on the iPhone. Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and DALL·E are rapidly transforming how we create images, tell stories, and even build entire comic books. In this episode of Today in Tech, Keith Shaw sits down with Michael Todasco—an AI advisor, creative technologist, and visiting fellow at San Diego State University—to examine the explosive growth of AI image generators and the big questions they raise.Generative AI is transforming customer service — but are companies ready? In this episode of Today in Tech, Keith Shaw talks with Glenn Nethercutt, CTO at Genesys, about the rise of AI-powered chatbots, agent copilots, and the shift toward empathetic, agentic AI in CX.In 2025, threat actors are recruiting from within—sometimes using underground 'job boards' to find insiders willing to sell credentials, plant malware, or steal data. In this episode of Today in Tech, host Keith Shaw talks with Ryan LaSalle, CEO of Nisos, about how insider threats are evolving and how companies can detect and prevent them. Can individuals and organizations still take control of their data — or has the privacy battle already been lost? In this episode of Today in Tech, host Keith Shaw is joined by Ron De Jesus, Field Chief Privacy Officer at Transcend (formerly with Grindr and Tinder), to explore the evolving challenges of data privacy, corporate surveillance, and cyber threats.

Computer Picks - Top Sports Betting Picks Today

Find the latest computer picks and score predictions for all your favorite sports like football, basketball, hockey, and more at OddsTrader. It can be very time-consuming to go over the data for the whole league in time for today’s games, and this is something you could have to do daily depending on which sport you are betting on. You also have to keep track of player injury reports that will impact the next game’s betting lines. That is why using computer picks can be very useful as they will dramatically cut down your research time and crunch all the pertinent data to create predictions based on historical trends, how teams match up to one another, and the impact of injuries.Sports betting is difficult, but it can be easier with some proper help. Instead of tracking all the advanced analytics and data yourself, we feed those numbers into our computer model to return predictions for the final score of an upcoming game. There is always a percent chance of the computer pick being wrong, but in using historical data that measures past matchups of teams with similar statistics, and with taking things like injuries and weather into account, we should improve your chance of victory over time by using these picks. The computer model allows for repeatable results in the future because this is a data-driven approach that takes the emotional side of betting out of the equation. Any sports bettor can twist themselves into taking the other side if they think about it hard enough.

What is a Computer?

Guide on what a computer is, covering its history, types, components, and usage today. Meaning of general-purpose, special-purpose, and specialized computers. The term "computer" was originally given to humans (human computers) who performed numerical calculations using mechanical calculators, such as the abacus and slide rule. The term was later given to mechanical devices as they began replacing human computers. Today's computers are electronic devices that accept data (input), process that data, produce output, and store (storage) the results (IPOS).For a complete timeline of the computers development, see the following link. ... Today, computers simplify tasks that were once complex and time-consuming. For example, you can write a letter in a word processor, edit it anytime, spell check, print copies, and send it to someone across the world in seconds. All these activities would have taken someone days, if not months, to do before. Also, these examples are a small fraction of what computers can do. ... Today's desktop computers have some or all the components (hardware) and peripherals below. When discussing a computer or a "PC," you're usually referring to a desktop computer found in a home or office. However, the lines of what makes these computers are blurring. Below are different examples of what's considered a computer today.

Whether for high-powered gaming, rendering complex 3D scenes, or crunching data-drenched spreadsheets, the best desktops still do it better. At PCMag, we've tested thousands of desktops since our beginnings in 1982, and our analysts and editors represent more than a century of experience in desktop testing and reviews.Of every all-in-one desktop we’ve tested in recent memory, the Lenovo IdeaCentre AIO 5i is the best AIO today for most of you. It’s not outstanding at any particular task, but it reliably meets the needs of the average household. With a large 27-inch 1440p screen, it does well to replace most monitors more than a few years old, and you’ll find an excellent 1080p webcam above it. This isn’t a barn-burner on benchmarks, but it has lots of pep for its price. If all you need is a relatively quick and easy home computer, this IdeaCentre should serve you well.At the top end of the market are business workstations, tricked-out gaming rigs, and magnificently engineered all-in-one PCs that cost several thousand dollars. Not only will a $3,000 gaming tower provide immense computing power today, but it should come with so much room for expansion and potential for upgradability that its useful life will be far longer than any laptop.Classic towers, sleek all-in-ones, space-saving mini PCs: Today's desktops pack neater designs and more value than ever. See our recent favorites based on our deep-dive reviews, plus all the shopping advice you need.

By using qubits, quantum computers let those bits be both 0 and 1 at the same time.Quantum computing will bring exponential advances to AI, the bank said, making today’s breakthroughs seem miniscule.A Bank of America analyst says quantum computing technology 'will reset everything,' including the future of AI.Without a doubt, it’s a powerful technology. Last December, Google announced that its quantum computer could solve a problem that would take supercomputers around 10 septillion years—longer than the universe has been around—in just five minutes.

Desktop PCs: A Dying Breed in the Age of Laptops and Mobile Devices

All computers were big, bulky, and plugged into the wall. Then, as components shrank and became less power-hungry, computers became portable, and later truly mobile. Today, laptop computers far outsell desktop systems, with the former growing every year, and the latter in a steady decline. Our first ever computer, an IBM-compatible 80286 system, came in a lovely beige horizontal desktop case with the CRT monitor perched on top. This was around 1990, and we would re-use that case throughout the 90s, ending its run with a Pentium 166 MMX somehow shoehorned into that aging chassis. Thanks to the rise of SSDs and component integration (such as sound cards in motherboards), most modern tower PCs are actually mainly wasted space. Which is why you're seeing more small form-factor computers like mini-towers and various interesting mini-ITX designs.Whatever exact desktop chassis you go with, desktop computers offer the most flexibility, the highest potential performance, the best performance-to-price ratio, and the option to upgrade your PC incrementally rather than replacing the whole thing every time, though in practice, upgrading one component at a time might not be as common as you think. What matters much more is the convenience, simplicity, and mobility of a laptop computer. Most people would rather have a MacBook Air or similar computer than a desktop PC, and even when working at a desktop it's dead simple to simply connect external peripherals.

Welcome to Computer Architecture Today! | SIGARCH

These are exciting times for the field of computer architecture. This blog is meant to be the place for all things computer architecture. Before we can talk about all the exciting activity, we have… The mission of this blog is to inform the broad computing community about current activities, advances and future directions in computer architecture. This is particularly important today given the slowing of silicon scaling and increasing development of end-to-end solutions with specialized architectures (such as Google’s Tensor Processing Unit, Microsoft’s Holographic Processing Unit, etc.).If you would like to contribute to Computer Architecture Today, please let us know by filling out the short form on this page, where it says “Contribute to Computer Architecture Today”. Be sure to indicate what topic you would like to write about and include contact information.Disclaimer: These posts are written by individual contributors to share their thoughts on the Computer Architecture Today blog for the benefit of the community.Computer architecture can mean different things to different people. For this blog we take a “big tent” approach with a broad definition of computer architecture. Fundamentally, it is the art and science of designing computer systems (including hardware and software) to satisfy society’s insatiable appetite for computational resources.
